CyberJocks & Electronic Gaming Therapy Continuum of Services

Most children find playing video and computer games reinforcing. This interest helps motivate the child to engage in group recreational play activities. Our assumption is that the more engaged the child is in the recreational activity the more opportunities for providing supervision and feedback targeting specific strengths and deficits.

CyberJocks & Electronic Gaming Therapy Scope of Services

CyberJocks and Electronic Gaming Therapy services fall use a scale of intensity defined by setting, duration, and complexity of intervention. A settings consists of whether it is clinic-based versus a recreational, academic, or home environment. Duration is comprised of no involvement of EGT staff versus time periods such as 30-minutes, one hour, etc. The complexity of intervention is either consultative, psychoeducational, or therapeutic. The goal with all children and adolescents is to move them to less intensive levels of service.

Low-Intensity Services

These services offer hi-tech recreational programs which encourage healthy competition, fair play, social interaction, and good sportsmanship. A great example of one such program is Wii Bowling. Adult supervision and guidance is provided by CyberJocks staff. These services are non-clinically based and have no involvement by EGT other than providing consultation to CyberJocks.

Mid-Intensity Services

At the mid-level range of services are the Supervised Group Electronic Gaming (SGEG) Programs. This is a parent information session and behavior modification program in a hi-tech recreational setting. Weekly sessions provide children and adolescents opportunities for growth through positive feedback from peers, staff and parents during group structured play of video and computer games (such as Nintendo Wii, Game Cube, and N64). Parents also have the option of developing and integrating individualized behavior plans. The SGEG program is a non-clinically based session that incorporates a mix of psychoeductional and therapeutic intervention in half hour increments. During this time parents are welcome to stay in an open exchange of information.

High-Intensity Services

Private psychotherapy services are appropriate for children and adolescents with more acute deficits or behavior problems that are manifesting themselves in multiple settings or environments. The goal of therapy is to provide and coordinate a more intensive intervention that integrates parent training and behavior modification across multiple settings (home, school, recreational) and medication. If deemed necessary, therapies are clinically based, one-hour or more in duration, and therapeutic in complexity. Parental Informational Exchange

The SGEG program welcomes parents to stay for the duration of the child's game play in an informational exchange group. This group promotes the development of problem solving techniques and options in a supportive environment of peers. Contact Dr. Messer for more information or with any questions.
