What is Electronic Gaming Therapy?

Most children find playing video and computer games reinforcing. This interest helps to motivate the child to engage in group recreational play activities. Our assumption is that the more engaged the child is in the recreational activity the more opportunities for providing supervision and feedback targeting specific strengths and deficits.

CyberJocks and Electronic Gaming therapy provide a range of services for children and families that facilitate social and emotional growth, foster self-regulation, and promote good behaviors through a strengths-based approach to electronic gaming and internet use.

EGT can effectively be used for children with:

  • ADD/ADHD
  • Autism Spectrum
  • Anxiety
  • ODD
  • PDDNOS

What is the CyberJocks.com/EGT approach?

The CyberJocks.com/EGT approach is aimed to treat children's enjoyment of video and computer games as a strength. Children's play of electronic games is a recreational activity, and like other recreational activities when properly structured, can provide children opportunities for social and emotional growth. The play of electronic games requires cognitive, emotional, and social skills that can be developed and improved. Interest in electronic gaming can be used to motivate children to engage in social activities and/or behavior modification programs.

Our culture has whole-heartedly accepted video and computer games. For example, parents and teachers introduce children to educational games on computers and portable systems like Leap Smart. As they get older, peers introduce them to hand-held systems like Gameboys and PSP's, and video games systems like Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo. Most recently massive multiplayer on-line games like Runescape and World of Warcraft have been integrated into everyday gameplay.

The CyberJocks.com/EGT approach is to facilitate children and adolescents (and even adults) getting together to play electronic games in settings that promote psychological wellness. CyberJocks provides state-of-the-art gaming technology in a family friendly facility. Electronic Gaming Therapy brings expertise in children clinical psychology approaches to parent training and behavior modification. Together we offer a range of services for managing, strengthening and effectively utilizing the play of video and computer games to facilitate social and emotional growth, foster self-regulation, and promote good behaviors.

Ultimately, CyberJocks and Electronic Gaming Therapy strongly believe that this recreational activity is one that ultimately requires parental or adult supervision. Managing and supervising video and computer games or going on-line is a parent's or adult's job.
